Front doors After you remove the door panels, disconnect the wires for the speakers, power window motor, and power side view mirror. You may need to slide the clip up or down the window track depending on which clip and which pulley the cable was removed from to an area where rotation is unimpeded. The four regulator clips both new and old are all different and will only work on their corresponding window track. Here is a picture of the pin in the window glassfor illustration. Pop off the rubber grommets for the inner door handle release cable and the door lock pin indicated by the yellow arrows in the picture below and then push the grommets through their respective holes in the carrier panel. The other doors are pretty much the same.
Part of the clamp will still be attached to the glass so will be visible at some point if you get the glass moving. I replaced the regulator because my original unit was making noise and I was concerned it would break and allow the glass to fall into the door. The panel should now be completely disconnected from the door. If there are two plastic rivets then the door lock assembly is attached to the panel that the regulator is attached too. Grinding or clicking noises indicate that the clip may fail soon. Since the door panel is off, you'll need to use the window controls on the 'other' door to do this. If you are removing the carrier panel with the door lock module still bolted to the edge of the door, you do not need to slide the carrier panel toward the front of the car when removing it since the lock module is not attached and will not impede its motion. Also, there is some Dynamat on my window regulator carrier panel the black panel bolted to the inside of the door surrounding the woofer. Plut the main plug back into the multiplex module, the small plug back into the switch panel, turn the ignition and check that it goes all the way up and down nice and smoothly, if it does put some grease on the runners and pulleys and bend the metal around the pulleys back down again by tapping with a hammer. How do you go about resetting a window motor when you replace a regulator? While the regulator is out make sure you check the condition of the poles on the alternator: they can be discolored but should not be excessively worn, corroded and should not have grooves worn in them. The cable apparently was wrapped the wrong way around the wheel that rolls the cable up and down.

The rearmost clamp that holds the bottom of the glass in place is nowhere to be seen, the front is still there but is one of the original plastic ones that normally break sooner rather than later. Before installing the cables into the new-design clip body, make sure that you have the correct clip for whatever door and window track you are working on. Then reinstall the torx screws. Put a sheet or blanket on the ground below the door and over the door sill as shown below to protect the sill and carrier panel when the panel is removed from the door. A large amount of the time when there is an electrical problem with the charging system it is the voltage regulator yet people just swap out the entire alternator because it comes with a new voltage regulator included because it is easier, fixes the problem and most people do not understand how an electrical system works on their car. Once the cable is removed from one of the pulleys, there should no longer be any tension on the cable and it can be easily removed from around the other pulleys. In the Jetta and Golf, the window track extends above the top of the sheetmetal panel of the door. You may want to wear gloves for this because there are sharp edges in the metal and plastic. If your inner door panel is original and has not had the door lock assembly removed you will need to remove it with the window regulator as they are attached, along with removing the exterior door handle. Remove all the 10mm bolts holding on the inner door skin. A broken, old-design window regulator clip can be seen in the picture below.
Do they make replacement clips or do I have to order a new regulator? If this occurs, the window glass may fall into the door and shatter! This almost definitely requires the help of a second person. It will be broken clips without any doubt,more often than not that is all the damage there will be,if the centre cable is damaged in any way then it will need a whole new regulator I'm afraid. If the window can still be moved, lower it until any remaining bolts are visible through the removable rubber grommets and undo them with a 10mm socket. I managed to get the window up by loosening the one remaining clamp bolt and left the switch disconnected just in case I forgot in the middle of a downpour.
